Comping Queen

Standard

As a not-so-secret comper, I’ve won some crazy prizes, including a car, several holidays, a fabulous Christmas lunch at home for ten and a zero gravity flight over Las Vegas.

Several of these prizes were won via slogan comps run by supermarkets (that’s one of the reasons why I’m a supermarket ho) but you can find great competitions all over the place if you know where to look.

My favourite websites are www.loquax.co.uk for searching by competition type, or if you’re looking to win something in particular, go to www.theprizefinder.com. Call me old school, but there is something really decadent and exciting about finding comps in a hard copy magazine; which reminds me, I must renew my subscription to the brilliant Compers News which has paid for itself many times over.

It’s exciting to see what comes through the post. Today my kids have received a goody bag from 20th Century Fox and Nickelodeon. They haven’t opened it yet, but I took a sneaky peek: It’s a runners up prize; a goody bag promoting Mr Poppers Penguins.

My husband was relieved we didn’t win the main prize this time: a day as a Zookeeper in London Zoo. I often drag him into these adventures and sometimes they work out more expensive than they should…

Film Festival Finalists

..like when my daughter’s film was shortlisted for the Leapster Explorer Film Festival in London on 31st May, a real red carpet affair!

I got very emotional in the run up to the event. We weren’t in line to win any prizes for technical merit but we had a one in ten chance of winning a family holiday to Florida. My brother and his family live out there and the last time I saw him was when I was pregnant with my son. (That was another comp prize where I swam with dolphins while pregnant.)

Swimming with dolphins really worked too, I have the most chilled out little baby. He’s 4 years old now, and I’d love for him to meet his cousins and uncle while he’s sooooooo cute!!!

When my daughters name was called out, my son ran onto the stage with her, truly believing he would be on a plane to Florida that very day. I told him beforehand not to expect it, but such was his faith in his big sister! When we didn’t win, he was distraught! Fortunately they gave us free tickets to wander round the Transport Museum, so he got over it.

I’m still trying to do every comp going to get to Florida, I would love a cross Atlantic family reunion.

Product Testing

I applied to be on the Readers’ Panel for Tesco magazine, and to my delight I have been reviewing all kinds of lovely freebies: lotions, potions and warpaint. I was also given a Vue gift card for £30 as and asked to review Harry Potter (£30! Yay! I could go several times to a cinema oop north. The card came from an agency in London, which explains a lot.) The Harry Potter review and my comments will be published in the Christmas edition; I will attach the link when it’s online.
